UNDP is the UN’s global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges.

UNDP is dedicated to the UN reform agenda, working together with all UN agencies towards promoting the UN Millennium Declaration and achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the world’s first common agenda for human development.

In Indonesia, UNDP works to advance human development; fight poverty and inequality; consolidate democratic governance at both national and local levels; support crisis prevention and recovery; and promote environmentally smart development. UNDP is also fully engaged in the fight against HIV and AIDS and the promotion of gender equality.

UNDP is at the service of Indonesia and its people. We are committed to support Indonesia’s national priorities and the implementation of Government of Indonesia’s Medium Term Development Plan 2000-2009 and other national and local development visions, strategies and plans.

UNDP Indonesia is dedicated to the five commitments of the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness, endorsed by 117 donor and programme countries including Indonesia, namely:

  1. national ownership;
  2. alignment with national priorities;
  3. donor harmonisation;
  4. managing for results; and
  5. mutual accountability.

UNDP’s work in Indonesia is an integral part of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework for Indonesia (2006-2010) and governed by the UNDP Country Programme the same period, signed with the Government of Indonesia in 2005.
In Indonesia, UNDP works in five priority areas:

  • Poverty Reduction and the Millennium Development Goals
    UNDP works to support Indonesia’s fight against poverty, promote inclusive economic growth, reduce inequalities between groups and regions, and help achieve the eight Millennium Development Goals by 2015 across the country.
    In this context UNDP has identified five key areas of engagement:
    1. A special programme promoting the MDGs in Papua;
    2. promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women (MDG3);
    3. contributing to the national response to HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria (MDG6);
    4. supporting a national campaign to raise awareness about the MDGs; and
    5. strengthening the statistical capacity for measuring and monitoring the MDGs at national, regional and local levels.
  • Democratic Governance
    UNDP’s support to the consolidation of democracy in Indonesia includes policy advice and technical assistance, strengthening the capacity of institutions, promoting and brokering dialogue, and engaging in knowledge networking and the sharing of good practices.
    Three priority areas:
    1. Promoting the ‘deepening of democracy’ through electoral support and parliamentary strengthening;
    2. supporting decentralization and local governance reform; and
    3. promoting human rights-based legal and justice sector reform, with the view to improving access to justice for poor people and vulnerable groups.
  • Environment and Sustainable Development
    UNDP is engaged in a series projects to ensure that important steps to ensure that the country’s vast natural resources are
    effectively managed to support sound economic growth and sustainable development. Partnering with government agencies, civil society organizations, and private sector, UNDP aims to continuously integrate strategic environmental considerations in policy formulation and planning process combined with effective capacity building to support implementation that delivers significant impacts on the ground.
    Three key areas of focus for UNDP:
    1. National-level action on climate change adaptation, focusing on analysis, policy advice and strategic planning;
    2. community-level action for better management of the environment, focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation through forestry protection, improved environmental management, and promotion of sustainable energy;
    3. saving the ozone layer by implementing the Montreal Protocol.
  • Crisis Prevention and Recovery
    Indonesia is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Natural disasters threaten human development and undermine the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Social conflict is also a serious development impediment. UNDP therefore gives top priority to supporting Indonesia’s crisis prevention and recovery efforts.
    Three key priorities:
    1. Peace-building through the promotion of good local governance, community empowerment, and economic opportunities;
    2. disaster mitigation and risk reduction; and
    3. disaster recovery, getting communities back on their feet and rebuilding local governance capacities after disaster strike.
  • Aceh and North Sumatra Recovery
    A significant part of UNDP’s work in Indonesia is focused on Aceh and Nias, supporting the continuing recovery from the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami as well as to 30 years of conflict. UNDP is working in support of the Agency of the Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Aceh and Nias (BRR) and the Provincial and Central Governments in promoting longer-term recovery and development for a brighter future of the people there.
    As the efforts move from recovery to longer-term development, five key priorities for UNDP support to Aceh and Nias have emerged:
    1. Efforts dedicated to combat poverty;
    2. The promotion of good governance and access to justice;
    3. Strengthening the peace process;
    4. Disaster risk reduction;
    5. Ensuring environmentally friendly sustainable development.
