Objective: The overall aim of the project is to assist the Government in its efforts to rehabilitate the agricultural sector and the livelihoods of earthquake-affected vulnerable rural farming households in earthquake-affected areas of Yogyakarta and Central Java.
The FAO will provide technical assistance, which will be entirely driven by Government needs and priorities and will be fully integrated with the actions of other members of the UN country team and other international development partners.
The project will have four immediate objectives:
To undertake a damage and needs assessment for the agricultural sector (including irrigation, crop production, livestock, fisheries and forestry) as input to the 18 months recovery plan emphasizing on the agricultural livelihood component;
To prepare a rehabilitation strategy and action plan for the agricultural sector, including a full cost breakdown;
To assist the government to mobilize the financial resources required for the rehabilitation strategy and plan for the agricultural sector from domestic and international sources;
To assist the earthquake-affected farmers with the immediate initial supply of agricultural inputs, livestock and initial small-scale irrigation rehabilitation.

Objective: The programme will fight poverty through the establishment of the conditions that lead to increased incomes and improved conditions of livelihood among marginal communities through the sustained growth of rural economic activity. This will be achieved by (i) empowering poor rural men and women to use financial, technical, market and government services to advance their own economic well being; (ii) building well planned and managed public facilities enabling the men and women of poor rural communities access to mainteram markets, produ tion opportunities and utilities and (iii) establishing effective and flexible programme management, providing enhancements to existing rural institutions through engagement and operational support.
