"With 20 per cent of Indonesia’s state budget going for education this year, Indonesia passes a new milestone in their commitment to improve access to schooling and quality of education. Ensuring learning is active, joyful and effective is an important step.”

Ms. Angela Kearney, Representative in Indonesia

Indonesia has reached a new milestone as the government is committing more resources for education. This vast archipelago with 77 million children is on the right track to meet the Millennium Development Goal 2 - universal education for boys and girls.  Roughly the same number of girls and boys enroll in school but the archipelago still faces the problem of access to education and quality of education. Early childhood development, a crucial start for children, needs to be strengthened. Governance in the education system needs to be improved.

Huge disparities remain in the lives of many children. Impoverished and without the benefit of an education, these children remain trapped in poverty and are far more vulnerable to disease, malnourishment, abuse, neglect, violence, exploitation and HIV. It's the poorest who are missing out on an education today. And it's the poorest who stand the most to gain if they only had the chance to learn.

On the occasion of Indonesia’s National Education Day on 2 May, let us ensure that every child is healthy, educated, protected and cherished.  Let us UNITE for Children!
