UNICEF Indonesia Website: June – July 2009 FOCUS on Immunisation

Website: www.unicef.org/Indonesia/

Routine immunisatiois a cost-effective way of preventing outbreaks of infectious diseases and thereby save the lives of children. It is vital that children are inoculated in time and in accordance with protocols set by health centres and outposts. Up to five million Indonesian children need immunization each year. Many of them do not complete the full vaccination programme, making them vulnerable to childhood illnesses such as tuberculosis, measles, whooping cough, polio, hepatitis B and tetanus.

UNICEF is assisting the government in the policy making and monitoring of immunisation programmes. The UN agency for children also procures the vaccines during outbreaks when national campaigns are urgently needed.
There is still much to be done to ensure that all children have the right to survive and thrive … from the most populated areas to the remotest parts of Indonesia !
