Inventory Making Symposium and Workshop for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Inventory Making Symposium and Workshop for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Indonesia was held at Hotel Alila Pecenongan, Jakarta, Indonesia on 19-20 August 2009. This workshop was co-organized by UNESCO Office, Jakarta and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia.

The opening ceremony which gathered about 150 representatives from various stakeholders, including cultural officials under the Directorate General of Culture Value, Arts and Film of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Culture and Tourism Research and Development Office, researchers and practitioners, started with a special message from the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr Sulistyo Tirtokusumo, the Director for Art of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and Mr Tjetjep Suparman, the Director General of Culture Value, Art and Film who read the keynote address on behalf of the Minister for Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia, H. E. Mr Jero Wacik.

At the opening ceremony, Mr Robert Lee, Deputy Director of UNESCO Office in Jakarta, highlighted importance for the safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and stressed that the objectives of the workshop were to strengthen the national capacities for implementing the 2003 Convention and to provide stakeholders with the information relating to the implementation of the 2003 Convention. Particular attention was given to inventorying of intangible cultural heritage present on Indonesia’s territory with the participation of communities, for promoting and safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage in Indonesia, and to understanding the timeline and procedure for the preparation of nomination files to the Representative List and to the List of Intangible Heritage in Urgent Need of Safeguarding.

The opening ceremony was followed by keynote remarks from Mr Arief Rachman, Chairman of Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO and presentations outlining the Lessons Learned from Experiences and Implementation of the Inventory Making of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Friendly Countries, Issues and Challenges in the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Cultural Map of Indonesia.

The presenters are Ms. Zhang Ming of the Ministry of Culture of China, Mr. Shigeyuki Miyata of the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo, Mr. Seong Yong Park of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre for Asia and the Pasific, Korea, Mr. Masanori Nagaoka, Programme Specialist for Culture of UNESCO Office Jakarta, Mr. Muchlis PaEni from the Film Censorship Board, Mr. Basuki Antariksa of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Gaura Mancacaritadipura of SNKI (Indonesian National Kris Secretariat), Mr. Iman Sucipto Umar of the Indonesian National Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Mr. Sri Hastanto of the Indonesia Institute of Arts, Mr. Harry Waluyo of the Culture Research and Development, and Mr. Mumus Muslim of the Directorate General of Culture Value, Arts and Film.

On the second day of the workshop, the national officials participated in a practical exercise in identifying and inventorying the elements of the intangible cultural heritage through a newly introduced data system of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Thirty-five (35) Indonesian national staff members dealing with technical data entry of cultural heritage were trained in this workshop.

As a follow-up of the workshop, a manual handbook of Intangible Cultural Heritage will be published by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in close cooperation with UNESCO Office Jakarta, for wider diffusion of the 2003 Convention and of national inventory making process in Indonesia.
